ECO warriors battling deforestation on the other side of the world have raised hundreds of pounds for a charity’s fighting fund.
Pupils at West Park Academy, Darlington, are sending a cheque for more than £700 to the Rainforest Foundation UK, which campaigns to save the world’s rainforests.
Year 3 pupils have been considering the issue of deforestation as part of their international studies.
They have debated the pros and cons and looked at how the loggers depend on the industry for their livelihoods as well as the impact on the globe of cutting down the trees.
Pupils presented their findings to the school in a special assembly that included video clips, news reports and eco-songs.
They organised a copper collection and a sponsored run ten laps around the playground that raised £327.39, which was matched by the charity Big Give.
Teacher Charlotte Brown said: “They are so proud of what they have achieved and rightly so. They have absolutely loved it and are now looking to support a species.
“They did gasp one morning when they came into the classroom and it had been deforested but they plan to continue their work.”
Lottie MacMillan, seven, said: “We were shocked when we walked into our classroom and all our work had been taken down and felt even more sad for the real forests.”
Nathan Speight, seven, added: “If we kill all the trees then there will not be any oxygen for the rest of us and everyone will die.”
