THE numbers added up for a group of sixth formers who gained an impressive tally of awards in a national maths challenge.

Richmond Sixth Form College students were awarded one gold, five silvers and seven bronzes in this year’s UK Maths Trust Senior Maths Challenge.

More than 81,000 pupils from across the country took part in the challenge with only ten per cent receiving a gold certificate making them eligible to take part in a follow-on competition.

The score of 92 was enough for Peter While, of Richmond, to achieve gold and take and achieve the senior kangaroo test.

“I love the logic of maths and aim to use it when I study computer science at university,” said the 17-year-old, who hopes one day to be a software engineer and has had an interview at Cambridge.

“The challenge is pretty tough but very rewarding and I think the sixth form performed really well to achieve the gold, silvers and bronzes.”

The UK Maths Trust is a charity that aims to advance the education of young people. It organises national maths competitions and enrichment activities for secondary school pupils.

Assistant head teacher Sandra Johnson said: “I think they have done brilliantly well. It isn’t easy to secure bronze, silver or gold so this is a proud achievement for the sixth form college.

“Most of the students plan to use their maths and will be studying the subject itself at university, or courses which have strong links to mathematics.”

Achieving silver were Rob Tweddle, Jake Sims, Connor MacFarlane, Mark Wolstenholme and Lindsay Christison.

Bronze certificates went to Josh Stark, Paola Osorio, Shane Paterson, Chelsea Foreman, Isaac Cockerill, Ben Walker and Peter McDonald.
