BEAUTY therapy students have benefited from hands-on experience helping members of the community who have suffered a stroke.
Thirteen Level 3 VRQ nail technology and beauty therapy students from Darlington College spent the morning at Age Concern with Darlington Stroke Club.
They chatted with members and performed hand and head massages, as well as completing nail file and polishes, in an initiative designed to boost their confidence and help the community.
Darlington College tutor Janet Elsdon said: “It is really good for the students to do something outside the college which expands their consultancy skills and helps the public.
“Massage really helps conditions that occur in the aftermath of having a stroke as it increases circulation and relaxes and calms the client. The social interaction with young people is also invaluable and it was lovely to see everyone getting on so well.”
Student Michael Whitby, of Richmond, said: “It has been great getting proper experience of work and I have really enjoyed my time with the Stroke Club members.”
Client Neville Dawson added: “I have never had a massage before and it has been really nice and great to have such lovely young people visiting us.”
Stroke Club volunteer Karen Ryder said: “The atmosphere has been fantastic. All the members have been smiling and enjoying themselves. The therapies themselves and the socialising aspect have done everyone the world of good.”
