YOUNG builders from a Middlesbrough school have brought a Mexican family together under one roof for the first time after constructing a home for them.

The group, from The King's Academy, in Coulby Newham, spent five days of their Easter holiday in Mexico, camping in the mountainous Rojo Gomez region of Tijuana.

The sixth formers were tasked with building a timber frame house with rendered walls in an area where people generally have only a shack to call home.

Teacher John Belmont, who led the trip along with student development officer Amie Eagling, said: "The week was challenging physically, emotionally and spiritually and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

"The most emotional day was when the keys were handed over and we found out that the three children, who had previously been unable to live with their parents due to a lack of room, could finally be reunited and they could live together as a family."

Each day started for the students, who are aged 17 and 18, with a Mexican breakfast and ended with a solar shower and social time in a marquee.

Ben Rowden said: "It was truly amazing and something which will stick with us all."

Francis Walton said: "The trip was one of the greatest experiences in my life that will always be remembered."

Leah Gordon added: "As challenging mentally, physically and emotionally as this experience was, it was a life changing opportunity which allows you to see the devastating conditions that so many people live in that we are blind to, but also the positive impact that our hard work can have."

The team joined forces with UK charity Urban Saints and the American organisation Amor which, through links with churches in Mexico, identifies those most in need of a new home.

Student Alex Dean said: "It was by far one of the best things I have done. I can't put into words how good it was."

Abbie Grosvenor added: "It was more powerful being there than I ever imagined and I am so grateful for the opportunity."
