ACADEMIC excellence, sporting ability and community spirit were all rewarded at a glittering North Yorkshire school award ceremony.
Allertonshire School, Northallerton, celebrated the achievements of its students with a trophy packed presentation night to recognise a host of educational achievements and contributions to school life.
The event, held at The Hambleton Forum, was hosted by Year 9 pupils Theadora Crocker and Alex Vayro with help from Allertonshire’s associate head teacher Chris Byrne.
“This evening reflects the breadth of opportunity that is available to students at The Allertonshire and the dedication and commitment of all our staff,” said Mr Byrne.
“All the young people who received an award tonight have made the most of these opportunities and their endeavours and achievements are a great source of pride to us all.”
Trophies were presented in a wide range of subject areas including English, maths, science, foreign languages, music, drama, sport, humanities, art, design, ICT, religious studies, citizenship and community involvement.
Achievements were also recognised with special awards for attitude, attendance, courage, perseverance, leadership, determination, competitive spirit and outstanding contribution by guest presenters including Mr and Mrs John Hyde, parents of former pupil Lance Corporal Ben Hyde, a former Allertonshire pupil, who was tragically killed in action in Iraq in 2003.
Entertainment for the evening was provided by Year 9 pupils Zara Wilson, singing Hopelessly Devoted to You from this year’s school drama performance of the hit musical Grease, and Sophie McGlynn with a rendition of On My Own, from the West End smash hit Les Miserables.
Athletes Ben Harrison and Jonathan Mann also put on an impressive display of gymnastic tumbles and turns in front of the packed audience of parents, family and friends.
Chair of Governors Rob Barker thanked the event sponsors and guests and praised the students and teachers for their hard work and enthusiasm.
“I am so pleased to be able to be a part of such a wonderful celebration,” said Mr Barker
“This has been an intense year for the Allertonshire School with a lot of changes – we became part of a new schools federation and underwent an Ofsted inspection.
“I am happy to say that we came out with flying colours and the inspectors were very complimentary about the positive attitude and polite, respectful behaviour of our pupils.”
Student Theadora Crocker, 14, of Northallerton who presented the awards and was also one of the recipients of the Ben Hyde Award for competitive spirit in sport, added: “I think it’s wonderful that the school has an awards night like this. It makes you feel very proud to be recognised.”
