A COLLEGE’S sporting talent will battle for honours at the weekend seeking glory for their school and the area.

Northallerton College is fielding eight students in the Hambleton and Richmondshire squad in an inter-area competition on Saturday (June 14).

They will compete at the highest level in York in a variety of disciplines, from track to field, after being selected for their prowess in their chosen sports.

Northallerton College students include Will Hayward, of Northallerton (400m), James Mann, of Romanby (triple jump), Jack Walmsley, of East Cowton (discus), Ellie Hore, of Northallerton (hurdles), all 15, Abbie Fletcher, 18, of Northallerton (200m), Cara Thompson, of East Cowton (100m), Jacob Munday, of Appleton Wiske (javelin), and Patrick Burnside, of Northallerton (triple jump), all 15.

For Abbie, a Richmond and Zetland Harrier, the competition is a first chance to shine after recovering from injury.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what I can achieve and have high hopes for the area contest,” she said.

Air cadet Patrick will be hoping for a flying start in the triple jump. He also runs the 800m and has competed at a regional level this year with a personal best of 2min 15sec.

Northallerton College’s head of PE Anna Harvey said: “We have always been well represented at area competition level and the students seem well prepared physically and mentally for the weekend challenge.

“The contest provides the ideal opportunity for them to judge exactly where they are among their peers in a region that produces some fine athletes.”
