FANTASY figures and colourful creatures are set to give a carnival welcome to hundreds of guests at a leading art college.
Mythical creations, wild jungle beasts and Narnia characters will roam the corridors of Cleveland College of Art & Design as it hosts its annual week-long further education summer show from June 5-11 at its Green Lane campus, Middlesbrough.
Created by first year level 3 art and design students, the carnival-inspired costumes, props, posters and animations will set the scene for visitors to view hundreds of student exhibits, the culmination of two years of work by some of the most talented young designers and artists in the region.
Art and design lecturer Sara Drodge said: “Our first year students have been working on their collaborative project for the summer show since February this year.
“They have made some spectacular props as well as interactive costumes, based on creations from the stage shows War Horse and The Lion King and along with stilt walkers, drummers and interactive displays we are sure that the welcome to this years show is going to be quite spectacular.”
Displays of ceramics, photography, 3D design, painting, drawing, illustration, fashion, textiles, digital arts, graphics, interactive design, moving images and fine art, will all be exhibited at the Middlesbrough-based college and creative experts will also be on hand to offer advice and information on both full and part-time courses available from September 2014.
Student Lydia O’Donoghue, 17, of Hartlepool, who has been working on an interactive zebra costume for the summer show said: “This has been the first time I’ve had to work to a deadline to make sure everything is ready on time.
“We are expecting a lot of people to come through the doors so the whole art and design group have been working to make sure that everything comes together for the show.
“I’ve had an amazing time since coming to CCAD, the standard of my work has improved, the tutors are great. I’m so much more confident, I’ve made loads of friends and I’m really excited about showing off what we do here.”
Student Emma Gonzalez, 17, of Middlesbrough, who relocated with her family from Barcelona, Spain, to attend CCAD, added: “My mum’s family is from England and my aunt told me about CCAD. I came to see the college two days before the art and design course started and enrolled straight away.
“It’s been really great; you get a lot of freedom to be creative and develop your skills and it also leads on to a degree course which you can do at the college’s Hartlepool campus.
“I think it is good that people are invited to come in and see what we have created – I hope they will like it as it has been a lot of hard work.”
