CENTIMETRES, strides and seconds separated the winners from the runners-up in the closest fought sports day on record for a South Yorkshire academy.

Nail-biting Year 10 girls’ and boys’ relay races eventually decided the winning house at Trinity Academy’s annual track and field day, staged at Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster.

THE Thorne academy students enjoyed a day of endeavour, sportsmanship, enthusiasm and passion littered with many new records.

In their first experience of a Trinity athletics day, the Year 7 students showed their mettle and talent for sport.

For the boys, records were broken by Reece Finlay in the 100m and James Taylor in the 200m, while Alice Ball broke the girls’ 200m record.

The shot putt was a new competition for Year 7 this year, with winners guaranteed a place in the record books. The spoils went to Reece Finlay and Jessica Lakin.

In Year 8, records were broken by Katie Chapman in the 100m and Tegan Poulston in the 300m.

Head of PE at Trinity Academy David Potts said: “The 300m race was added at the last minute as a number of girls wanted to have a go at the distance. This attitude was great to see and we now have a benchmark for other students to beat in the future.”

The Year 9 competition was fiercely contested, with many personal battles played out on the track and field. For the boys Aiden Coy set a new discus record and Ryan Pentland added the Year 9 long jump record to the Year 8 record he set in 2014.

Megan Williamson continued to dominate the girls’ throwing events setting new records in the discus and javelin. She now holds four school records, the Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 javelin records and the Year 9 discus.

In Year 10, students put friendships aside to compete for house points. Jordan Courtney claimed a new 200m record, Domante Didvalyte a new 100m mark at her first attempt and other records were broken by Ewan Bennett in the long jump and Rebecca Harvey in the discus.

The house contest was decided on the last two races of the day.

Poets finished second ahead of Shepherds in the Year 10 girls’ relay with the overall result coming down to the final race, the boys’ relay. This was taken by Poets sprinter Ewan Bennett helping his house lift the trophy by just three points.
