MUSIC makers have combined their talents in a special multi-school orchestral performance.

Young musicians from Northallerton School & Sixth Form College took part in a musical play day with fellow performers from Corpus Christi School, Leeds, Morley Academy, Leeds and Easingwold School.

The 80-piece orchestra of violins, cellos, flutes, clarinets, saxophones, bass and electric guitars, drums, trombones, euphoniums, French horns, piano, keyboards, timpani and percussion put on a show-stopping performance following a day’s rehearsal in the lower school main hall.

Head of music at Northallerton School & Sixth Form College Mary David said: “It’s wonderful for our school to be able to host the Play Day event.

“Getting students together from different schools to share their musical talents and forge friendships through their music is wonderful.

“The initial idea for the event came from John Atkin, head of music at Corpus Christi School, Leeds, where I did my teacher training, so I jumped at the opportunity for our musicians here in Northallerton to get involved and it has proved to be a really successful day.”

Opening with California Dreamin’, by The Mamas and Papas, the orchestra, led by North Yorkshire County Council peripatetic music teacher Tim Waters, played a total of seven musical numbers including Forget You, the James Bond theme tune, Disney melodies and Hallelujah.

Northallerton School & Sixth Form College keyboard player Alex Kennedy, 14, of Northallerton, added: “ I used to play the keyboards a little in primary school but I really got interested in music when I moved up to secondary school.

“This is my first Play Day with students from other orchestras and it has been really good.

“It gives you an idea of other people’s musical ability and it’s nice to hear the final outcome of playing in such a large group.”
