YOUNG ambassadors have been promoting the benefits of further education as research reveals their sixth form to be among the best in the country.

Student representatives from Northallerton School and Sixth Form College addressed more than 130 Year 10 pupils in Richmond and Bedale to encourage them to think carefully about making the right choices after finishing their GCSE exams next summer.

The sessions were staged as Oxford Analytics research showed the sixth form was 6th in the country for added value for A level geography and 12th for A level physics.

Seven sixth form students spoke to pupils at St Francis Xavier School, Richmond and Bedale High School on the benefits of choosing the right sixth form college both educationally and socially.

Jack Brent, 17, of Northallerton, said: “A lot of the students we spoke to were very open minded about continuing their education after their GCSEs and many were still unsure about where would be the best place for them to study.

“It was really good to speak to them about the different options available and for them to ask us why we had made the choice to go where we did to complete our A levels.”

“I personally chose Northallerton School and Sixth Form College because of its friendly atmosphere and the small class sizes where you get fantastic one to one support from the teachers – as well as a great social aspect to school.”

Head of Sixth Form Bronia Harris said: “It’s wonderful that our ambassadors are so passionate about our school and their education that they want to let pupils at other schools know about it. We are thrilled to learn about the national rankings for our physics and geography A level results last year, which are a huge credit to our students and teachers.

“Our ethos at Northallerton School and Sixth Form College is that we are big enough to provide and small enough to care and with 98 per cent of our students who applied to go to university securing a place and 86 per cent getting their first choice, that is certainly true.”

Northallerton School and Sixth Form College will be enrolling on August 20 from 10am for A level courses starting in September.

Prospective candidates will be able to look around its facilities and speak to current students and teaching staff at the Open Evening on November 4 at 6.30pm.

Sixth former Amy Lazenby, 17, of Bedale, added: “I moved to the area last summer before starting my A levels and could see Northallerton School and Sixth Form College was the best place for me to study.

“The college is small, friendly and so welcoming. I’ve made loads of new friends and I’m really pleased that I made the choice to come here.”
