CREATIVE cousins are proving that artistic talent runs in their family with their work going on display in an academy exhibition.

Katie Milburn and Sophie Milburn, both 17, attend The King's Academy, in Coulby Newham, where their creations in AS fine art, textiles and product design were unveiled to students, parents and visitors.

Sophie, of Marton, is taking all three subjects and, like cousin Katie, who is studying fine art, will find out her results next month.

"Our dads are brothers, but I don't think anyone else in the family is particularly creative," said Sophie.

In textiles, students worked on the themes of gardens and architecture.

Sophie added: "I wanted to look at structure so I created a skirt, which is narrow and fitted at the waist then spreads out. I used it to show the concept of decay in the garden, and also linked it to architecture.

"In art you know the standard you need to achieve with a piece of work, and I love textiles because every lesson is different. In product design you're working towards something which, for me, was up-cycling everyday objects to make jewellery."

Katie, of Coulby Newham, was inspired by pictures of Paris for her artwork, which she used to create a collage of images over which she drew close-up buildings.

"The theme was towns and cities. I love Paris and I like the way the buildings create shadows and reflections and I created that with lots of shading and smudging. It took about 30 hours," she explained.

The work of Gaudi in Barcelona was the inspiration for another textiles students Helen Roberts, 17, of Acklam, who drew on the artist's colourful windows in her silk painting.

Principal Chris Drew said: "Once again our creative students have produced some excellent work which really shows the range of skills they are able to develop here.

"Work of such high quality deserves its own exhibition and I know the students are proud to have so many people admiring what they've achieved this year."
