STUDENTS with a gift for giving have donated hundreds of items to ensure an abundant harvest festival for local people.

The collection of goods at Trinity Academy, in Thorne, includes fresh fruit and vegetables as well as tinned foods, jars, pasta and other goodies, which will be delivered to the elderly and needy in the area in the coming days.

Head of food at the academy and harvest coordinator Sarah Nalty said: "We had an assembly about harvest festival and about how thankful we should be for everything we have, and some of the students made a display for the reception area.

“Boxes were handed out to form tutors as students started bringing in items from the first day back after the summer holidays.

"They've really risen to the challenge and families have donated a fantastic amount and a huge variety of non-perishable and fresh vegetables that we'll distribute in the community."

Students have helped to pack more than 80 boxes with an assortment of harvest gifts.

The boxes will be delivered by minibus to refuges and to those in need via local churches.
