CHILDREN have found a fresh perspective on the history, culture and nature of their town, using their creative skills.
Youngsters at Gurney Pease Academy, part of The Education Village Academy Trust, used art to reveal what they had learned and to reflect their thoughts on Darlington.
With the emphasis in schools usually on literacy and numeracy, the children were able to get creative in the art project that involved every child, from two-year-old pre-nursery children to the oldest in Year 6.
Younger pupils in EYFS created art work linked to South Park and other green spaces, focusing on the natural environment, while children in KS1 looked into Darlington’s engineering and railway past at the Head of Steam Museum.
Years 3 and 4 got to visit the Hippodrome to study entertainment and performance, while Years 5 and 6 followed the heritage trail looking at the influence and contribution of the Pease family and the Quakers, which included some of the beautiful architecture on display in and around the town.
Back at school, the children produced paintings, drawings, collages and models of all the things they had studied for an exhibition of their work to which parents and other family members were invited.
Principal Alison Sinclair said: “They have produced some beautiful artwork but the main thing is that they have learned about many aspects of their town. All the children have thoroughly enjoyed the project and were proud to show off their work, some of which we will frame and keep in school.”
