A COMMUNITY Christmas lunch proved to be a trip down memory lane for a former student.
Activities co-ordinator at The Grange Care Home Jill Lynch recalled her days at Longfield Academy, Darlington, when she brought some of her residents to enjoy some festive fair with colleague Joyce Sykes.
The school stages the Christmas lunch every year for local residents who enjoy a three course meal, complete with turkey and pudding, before being entertained by staff and students.
“It doesn’t seem to have changed a bit,” said Mrs Lynch. “It is so nice inviting in the community for the lunch and I know our residents really enjoy the opportunity to get out and meet the lovely students.”
More than 170 people accepted the invitation to dine, enjoy each other’s company, quizzes, bingo, the school orchestra and a performance of festive songs by children from Kiddies Corner nursery.
Each visitor was presented with a Yuletide hamper of tasty treats decorated by students from Years 7, 8 and 9, while Year 10 and 11 students provided prizes.
Visitor Paul Scruby said: “It really is a fantastic occasion and the school puts on such a lovely spread. It is also great being able to meet and talk to the young people who make us feel so welcome.”
Head teacher Susan Johnson said: “It is a privilege to entertain members of the community especially when many actually went to this school.
“Longfield has always been at the very heart of this local community and we are delighted to open our doors so visitors can share in the festivities.”
