CARING teachers have been rewarded by pupils for their support both inside and outside the classroom.
Students at Springfield Academy, Darlington, part of the Education Village Academy Trust, presented four members of school staff with Power for Good certificates.
The pupil-nominated award, launched by the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA), recognises teachers and school staff who go above and beyond the call of duty to provide pastoral care to students on issues such as bullying, relationships, family life and mental health.
Principal Angela Henderson said: “As part of anti-bullying week we asked our students to nominate staff members who they thought had gone the extra mile to support them through any issues either at school or at home.
“A number of pupils wrote lovely citations about four of our members of staff who were then each rewarded for their dedication to student welfare by the ABA.
“At Springfield Academy we place a huge emphasis on personal, social and health education, with all of our staff who have a positive impact on providing a safe environment in which children can thrive so for the children themselves to recognise that we are doing a good job means that it is working.”
Staff who were awarded certificates included deputy head teacher Paula Austin, nominated by Leah Cooper and Rebecca Smith, for her ability to sort out issues, make learning fun and for being a good listener; Year 2 teaching assistant Cathryn Lee, nominated by Bobby Wilson for being there when he needed a listening ear; Year 6 teaching assistant Lisa Smith, nominated by Chantelle Lawson for being kind and amazing; and Year 6 teacher Kelly McManus, nominated by Keeley Nelson for finding ways to overcome problems, being trustworthy and a good listener.
Miss Smith said: “I felt quite emotional when I was given my certificate; it was a very proud moment for me. Knowing that you have made a difference in a child’s life makes everything worthwhile.
“I hope our students see me as a role model and use my example to ensure they are always compassionate and considerate to others.”
