PUPILS were introduced to the world of work in an inaugural careers day designed to stimulate their interest in a range of professions.
Five to nine-year-olds at Eldon Grove Academy, Hartlepool, were able to question a journalist, catch up with an Olympic marathon runner and get a taste of the restaurant business in the first project of its kind in the school.
Experts in their fields, also including the church, 3D design, midwifery, police, dance and drama, staged talks and workshops to inspire the children for the future. Other pupils visited Hartlepool FE College to gain an insight into further education.
Organiser Scott Smith said: “Traditionally, careers sessions like this are staged in secondary schools where the children are much older. But it is never too early to look and think about what you would like to do with your life.
“I remember when I was at school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do or even the types of jobs which were out there. I think it is really important to show the pupils what they will be able to do when they are older. We have to work to have the lifestyle we choose so it is very important to find something that we enjoy.”
He said the day had been a great success and the pupils and visitors had enjoyed it immensely.
“It is exciting to think about the seeds that have now been sown that could provide our children with focus, drive and ambition in the years to come,” he added.
