A STUDENT with a passion for the past is considering his future studying at one of the best universities in the world.
Northallerton College sixth former Dominic Jacques has been offered a place to read history at Gonville and Caius, Cambridge University. The 17-year-old, of RAF Leeming, first developed his love of history when he was at Bedale High School. He moved to Northallerton College to develop his knowledge and his Cambridge offer is now spurring him on in his studies to achieve the required grades of A* and two As. He said: “I went to a number of summer schools and absolutely loved the teaching style of Cambridge. So I was thrilled to be offered a place and am really looking forward to reading history there. “Studying the way ancient civilisations lived and seeing how that is often relevant today is fascinating.” Dominic’s parents both work for the Ministry of Defence, his father is in the RAF. He hopes to join the University Air Squadron but at 6ft 3in is too tall to be a pilot. “I am considering the RAF myself but will probably look at personnel,” he said. Dominic is part of Northallerton College’s Johnson Group, named after Samuel Johnson, creator of the English Dictionary. It aims to support students in reaching their aspirations informing them of opportunities, including summer schools, subject days and work experience. The college also invites key professionals in to talk about their careers and hold workshops, as well as advise on how best to apply successfully for places at Russell Group universities and top apprenticeship schemes. Run by teacher Anna Cox, the group has helped students secure places at the country’s top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and Durham. She said: “Our students have the ability to study at the highest level. The group helps boost their self-esteem and self-belief so they are confident enough to aim high. Dominic is a great example of what can be achieved and we are delighted Cambridge was sufficiently impressed to offer him a place.”
