A SNAPSHOT in time will soon adorn the walls of a primary school as pupils update a visual timeline that stretches back decades.
Hundreds of pupils at Reid Street Primary School, Darlington, have walked past the existing jigsaw mural painted 22 years ago on a corridor wall.
The current generation has been working for months with the school’s arts lead Rebecca Brown and community artist Yvonne Preston to fill in the gap with two boards of images now being installed next to the original.
Children considered what has happened in the past decades and came up with images ranging from Ant and Dec’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and the London Olympics to the pandemic, death of the Queen and coronation of the new King.
Principal Paula Ayto said: “The original was painted in 2001 and covered events such as the World Cup win of 1966, the sinking of the Titanic in the same year the school was built and the swinging 60s. We thought it was time to update the mural and Yvonne and the children have done an amazing job.”
Yvonne added: “The children have been so lovely and were great to work with. They came up with so many fabulous ideas we could have covered even more space. I came to this school many years ago and it has triggered memories of how I watched the first moon landing on a black and white TV in the hall.”
