A STUDENT with a passion for the environment is pledging to devote his considerable brain power to protecting the world after securing a place at Cambridge.
Richmond School and Sixth Form College student Tom Pearson gained two A*s and two As at A Level to send him to Gonville & Caius, one of the oldest colleges at Cambridge University, to read geography.
Already a member of the campaign group 38 Degrees, the 18-year-old, of Richmond, was instrumental in persuading Richmond Sixth Form’s bistro to swap plastic cups and cutlery for reusable ceramics and metal ware.
“I have always loved nature and have been interested and concerned about the environment for some time,” he said. “I’m studying geography so I can do my bit to try and fix what is going wrong in the world. After geography I would like to study law and work for an environmental group, such as Greenpeace.”
Head of sixth form Leslie Richardson said: “Tom has done incredibly well in his studies and richly deserves his place at Cambridge, of which we are all very proud, as we are of his obviously well developed social conscious.
“Tom has been exemplary in the way he has led the school and sixth form student body as head boy and we know he will go from strength to strength as he starts the next phase of his life.”
