AN academy came together to celebrate the unity it brings to the heart of the local community.
Staff, students and governors of Trinity Academy, in Thorne, were joined by parents and other family members and friends for the annual prize-giving, which this year had the theme, ‘Together, we are Trinity’.
Principal David Page said: "We devised the theme at a time when it felt like our community was under attack and it has been fantastic to see, in the aftermath of some very serious events in our country, how people have come together to help one another."
Head boy Bartosz Swedziol and head girl Francesca Middleton hosted the event and introduced the guests and performances.
Scenes and songs by cast members of academy productions, Lord of the Flies and Billy Elliott, focused on the danger in differences, while Jasmine Clarke and Megan George's performance of the song For Good from the musical Wicked, and the academy's own Wrong Direction trio, highlighted harmony.
In a show of solidarity for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, the academy performers also sang their own version of Bridge Over Troubled Water.
In his speech, guest speaker Professor Mark Pike, head of the school of education at the University of Leeds, focused on the development of character in young people, which "goes hand in hand with academic motivation and aspirations".
"You build a community of character by building people of character," he said.
Prof Pike also presented prizes to students for academic excellence, endeavour and improvement, citizenship and sport. A number of special prizes were also presented, including the coveted outstanding student of the year award, which went to sixth former Yasmin Mosby.
