PRIMARY pupils got Easter off to a cracking start with an array of painted eggs.

Students at West Park Academy, Darlington, entered the school’s annual Easter egg decorating competition to create a design with a 2016 Olympics Games theme.

Alongside podium finishes and Olympic torches, the pupils, aged from three to 11, produced outstanding displays of egg-themed sporting events, including swimming, tennis, skiing, football, rugby, egg-boxing and egg-equestrian events.

Imaginative students even created their own mini hard boiled long jumper Egg Rutherford and hurdler Jessica Egg-nnis.

The competition, which attracted hundreds of entries, was judged by Father Kyle McNeil, of St Mary’s Church, Cockerton and Vicki Hollings, senior sales advisor from Hays Travel, Darlington, who provided chocolate Easter eggs and goodie bags for the winners and runners up.

“Judging the completion has been an extremely difficult job,” said Father McNeil.

“This was my first time as a judge and I was amazed at the imaginative displays that the children produced.

“It was obvious to me that they had been created with such joy and it was an absolute pleasure to be invited to West Park Academy to see them all.”

The eggs were judged on imagination, creativity, colour and theme.

“The entries were extraordinary, judging was exhilarating and the winners exceptional,” said Ms Hollings.

“Hays Travel has been providing the prizes for West Park Academy’s Easter egg competition for a number of years now and each time the standard has been higher and higher.

“I was especially looking for displays where you could see that the children had done a lot of the work themselves, without too much help from an adult, and I was incredibly impressed.”

Principal Catherine Thompson added: “Once again our pupils have amazed me with their imagination and creativity.

“It’s wonderful to have such talented children in our school and it’s a fabulous way to start the Easter holidays.”
