STUDENTS have been telling their peers what makes their sixth form unique after opening its doors to the public.
Sixth formers greeted school children and parents at a special open event at Richmond School and Sixth Form College.
Younger students were given a flavour of the college life they can expect to enjoy if they study their Years 12 and 13 at the sixth form centre.
Head girl Lindsay Christison said: “The best thing about Richmond Sixth Form College is the support you receive while still being able to study independently.
“Because class sizes are much smaller than many sixth form colleges teachers are able to give every student much more attention. They can tell from the look on your face whether you have understood, are still processing the information or need to go over it again. Richmond School is second to none because teachers really get to know you.”
Head boy Chris Gill added: “Being part of a larger school also has many benefits; we can use the amazing facilities and the mentoring of younger children is valuable to us and very rewarding. Support from teaching and careers staff has really helped us produce very strong personal statements.”
Visitors were given an insight into a host of subject areas, from maths to biology, drama to design, classics to media studies.
There were also sessions on futures in engineering, applying for medicine, veterinary science and dentistry, Russell Group universities, careers and employability, as well as mentoring, pastoral care and studying for an Extended Project Qualification.
Head teacher Ian Robertson said: “I thoroughly enjoy our open events because we let our wonderful students take the lead. They are the best ambassadors anyone could ask for and their passion for and pride in the sixth form and their studies is clear for all to see.”
