STUDENTS are driving home a fund-raising message that's right up their street.

Learner drivers Lauren Walker and Kieran Wood have taken part in a motoring marathon that saw them join hundreds of other drivers and instructors raising money for Children in Need.

Accompanied by their instructor Clare Walker, the Trinity Academy students led the Doncaster to Rotherham leg of The Big Learner Relay, completing a local section of the charity drive that is covering the length and breadth of Britain.

Clare said: "I've always donated to Children in Need and, as a driving instructor, when I heard about the Big Learner Relay I thought it was a great way to contribute. Instructors and learners from all over the country are taking part.

"Lauren and Kieran took over the relay from drivers who came from Scunthorpe, then we handed over to the next leg drivers in Rotherham."

Donors have sponsored a coloured spot on Clare's normally discreet black Renault Clio, which can be seen around Thorne, Hatfield and Stainforth, where she has been teaching learners for the last 11 years.

Lauren, 17, who is studying A levels in English literature, psychology and history, added: "It's nice to be able to do something for charity while having a driving lesson at the same time."

David Page, principal at Trinity Academy, said: "The Big Learner Relay is a really innovative way to raise money for Children in Need and it's great that Trinity students were able to take part."

The brainchild of instructor Lou Walsh, the first Big Learner Relay last year raised £65,000 with 135 instructors and pupils covering 2,500 miles in 14 days.

This year it has grown to 3,000 miles and 180 lead teams, with many more supporters joining the convoy.
