A CONSTRUCTION student’s career has been heaven sent after helping to restore one of the world’s most historic religious buildings.
Darlington College level 3 extended diploma in construction student Phillip Smalley impressed building company Simpson so much, during work experience at Durham Cathedral, that he has now taken up a full-time position as assistant site manager with the York-based firm.
Phillp, 26, of Sedgefield, is now working on a second ecclesiastical project by helping oversee the new build of St Therese Lisieux Church in Ingleby Barwick.
“It’s such an interesting and varied career,” said Phillip.
“There’s always something different happening each day and I’m constantly learning new things on the job.
“To get the opportunity to work on buildings like Durham Cathedral is absolutely incredible.”
Phillip was introduced to Simpson Construction by his college tutor.
“I was told that Simpson were looking for someone to start work experience and that they would be attending a careers market place event at the college to talk about job opportunities,” said Phillip.
“After speaking to them I was initially offered a week’s placement and when that was completed they offered me another two weeks but before I could even start they contacted me again offering me a full time job.
Simpson Construction is now funding Phillip to return to college to complete his Level 4 higher national certificate (HNC) in building studies.
“Having companies come into college is a great way for them to see young people that are looking to get a foot on the ladder,” added Phillip.
“It’s also good for the students to be able to talk to different contractors and businesses all under one roof to find out the career opportunities available to them.”
Darlington College will be holding its next careers marketplace from November 23-26 5.30pm-7.30pm.
