A SPECTACLE of sport, two emotional services and a feast of fashion brought one of the most successful years in a school’s history to a conclusion.
In a year Barnard Castle School was awarded the highest accolade of ‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, students spent the final days of term competing in track and field events and accepting awards at prize-giving services, while sixth formers paid a fond farewell at a glittering ball.
Years 6 pupils and their families enjoyed a valedictory service in chapel to mark the end of Prep School before they move up to senior school in September.
Headmistress Laura Turner told them: “It’s a time of mixed emotions. While the children are very much ready for their next adventure, we can’t quite believe that they have grown up so quickly.
“The wonderful things you have learned from your experiences at Prep School will help you move forward with confidence. So be keen to try new things and question the world around you. Be in control of what happens and dare to be you.”
For some Year 13 students their valedictory service in chapel and leavers’ ball, at Ramside Hall, near Durham, marked the culmination of 14 years at Barnard Castle School and the transition from Barnardian to life-long Old Barnardian.
Headmaster of the school Tony Jackson said: “It has been a special journey. Students have had to contend with a global pandemic at the height of their GCSEs which meant their A levels were their first nationally recognised exams.
“But here they are, having concluded that journey, standing proud and purposeful after overcoming adversity. Focussing on the skills beyond the grades is what makes Barney unique and you have done us and your families proud. You are now part of something bigger – once a Barnardian always a Barnardian.”
