A Sunderland school has been recognised for supporting students to learn how to prevent bullying.

Christ’s College has been named National Anti-Bullying Ambassador School of the Month, chosen from a pool of more than 1,000 active Anti-Bullying Ambassador schools.

Students attended anti-bullying a training session run by The Diana Award where they worked together and acquired vital skills to enable them to change attitudes and behaviours by building their skills and confidence to address different situations, both off and online.

At the end of the training, students made an action plan of how to approach bullying issues that may arise in their schools and committed to their roles as anti-bullying ambassadors.

Among the projects the ambassadors worked on was the development and delivery of a

writing and art competition, which was open to both primary and secondary students, on the theme of disabilities. Students across the college were invited to submit a piece of writing, poem or artwork based on physical or mental disabilities.

Anti-bullying ambassadors Max Elliott and Rhys Lisle said: “The topic of disabilities was chosen for the competition to spread awareness and eliminate negativity surrounding disabilities. We believe this is going to help tremendously, to put a stop to discrimination.”

A spokesperson for The Diana Award told the students: “We were so impressed with all of the incredible work that the team has accomplished since attending training. You really wowed us with your recent work towards the Respect Badge, especially the art competition, which is such a brilliant way to represent and celebrate all types of identities.

“The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors are clearly extremely dedicated to tackling bullying behaviour and are keen to create an inclusive environment at their school.”
Nicky White, principle of Christ’s College, added: “I am absolutely delighted that Christ’s College has been named as National Anti-Bullying School of the Month for June 2023. This is a fantastic national achievement considering that students only received their national training in February.

“Secondary Anti-Bullying Ambassadors continue to work incredibly hard, to ensure a fantastic range of anti-bullying projects across the whole school. We certainly look forward to further exciting anti-bullying projects in the year ahead.”
