EXPERTS have launched a new venture to lead the construction world through the bewildering array of technology that is transforming the industry.

Architects Simon Crowe and Johnathan Munkley have secured positions as leaders in the field of BIM – Building Information Management – that is sweeping the profession.

As director and BIM manager, respectively, of North-East based Niven Architects they have already won global acclaim for their work including the prestigious Build Qatar 2012 and Build Sydney 2013 competitions.

Following a huge investment in hardware, software and training at their Darlington practice they find themselves at the forefront of a technology that is revolutionising the built environment.

As a result, they have launched a new venture, BIM Strategy Ltd, to inform private and public sector professionals and help them to avoid pitfalls and unnecessary expense.

In the construction industry, Building Information Management uses state of the art computer software to provide a single set of three dimensional plans for building projects of all sizes. It is pioneering in its approach to design and project procurement.

The system offers one electronic point of reference containing vital information for the many consultants and contractors working on a scheme, ranging from wall sockets to wiring ducts, drainage, materials and dimensions.

The BIM model sits in the ‘cloud’ and is accessible, via the internet, replacing conventional plans and computer aided design and because the model contains all relevant details of the scheme it allows for more accurate costs, helps with ordering materials and results in less waste.

Niven Architects have developed the necessary BIM processes and protocols with the help of Teesside University’s Knowledge Transfer Programme. Johnathan, of Billingham, recently attended a four day Autodesk event at The Venetian, in Las Vegas, with 10,000 delegates which reaffirmed Niven’s position as leaders in the field.

The new consultancy will offer a multi-pronged approach:

• Assistance with the development of company BIM-based strategies
• Continual professional development and training as technology develops apace
• 3D modelling for suppliers, such as door manufacturers, who will need their products digitising so they can be uploaded to the computer model.
• Expert advice on which type of systems, software and hardware to invest in based on a clients’ specific needs and project work.

The new service is expected to attract interest from construction consultants, contractors, developers, local authorities, educational establishments and product suppliers.

Johnathan said: “It has taken us a significant period of time and investment to get to this point and we have learnt an enormous amount about what does and does not work.

“BIM is the future; it’s the way forward and the Government is demanding compliancy by 2016 in all public sector projects. We can help the industry take the leap of faith to the world of BIM.”

Simon said: “BIM takes the guesswork out of design and construction. It is accurate, consistent and enables professionals to make informed decisions, calculate exact quantities and future running costs. It reduces risk and waste and promotes sustainable construction.”
