MUSICAL maestros brought Mowtown to the manger with a parody of favourite festive hits in the smash hit nativity It’s Chr-i-i-i-stmas!

Pop-tastic Key Stage 2 pupils at Eldon Grove Academy sprinkled a touch of glitter on the traditional Christmas story as they counted down the hits to find the Yuletide number one.

Glam-rock shepherds The Crooks brought the beat to Bethlehem alongside boy band trio The Wise Guys, bickering folk-punks The Landlords, 60s pop icons Don Kee & The Animals and the brassy Herod & The King’s Swingers.

Eldon Grove Academy Year 5 teacher Jonathon Moon said: “This year’s nativity will definitely get the whole school rocking on the countdown to Christmas.

“We have 180 of our Key Stage 2 pupils taking part and each of them has either a speaking, singing or dancing role in the performance.

“The songs are all pastiches of some of the best known Christmas songs and the children have had great fun learning them.”

Introduced by hosts Chris Cracker, Holly Bush, Tim Tinsel and Sam Frost, the musical acts were joined by angels, donkeys, camels and stars for numbers including The Streets of Bethlehem, There is a Stable and Bad King Herod, before the festive chart-topper was proclaimed as the entire Yuletide cast.

Pupil Kate Cameron, ten, who took on the role of presenter Holly Bush, said: “The play is very different from the traditional Nativity story but still tells the tale of the birth of Jesus through music.”

Eldon Grove music subject lead Jane Jobson added: “The children have been absolutely fabulous and have worked really hard.

“They all got into the spirit of the performance, the costumes were fantastic and it really has put everyone in the festive mood.”
