A CONTENT creator has found himself at the centre of a technological revolution that is sweeping through an industry just weeks after leaving college.

Initial talks around work experience between Niven Architects and former Darlington College student Jake Thompson soon turned into a full-time job after his passion for drawing secured him a post in an emerging sector.

The 19-year-old ex-Richmond School pupil studied L3 extended diploma in engineering at Darlington College.

His course helped him develop skills in computer aided design, which he is now using to draw designs for countless objects used in the construction industry for clients across the world.

Jakes skills are proving essential for pioneering developments taking the construction industry by storm.

Darlington-based Niven Architects have been at the forefront of Building Information Modelling on the back of which they launched a new company, BIM Strategy Ltd.

The system uses digital technology in the construction process and management of buildings for their complete life cycle. It is proving so crucial to the construction industry because it brings together a host of professionals and tradesmen who then work from a single set of three-dimensional plans for projects of all sizes.

The technology is redefining the construction industry globally and in the UK is being mandated by the government.

The BIM model sits in the ‘cloud’ and is accessible, via the internet, replacing conventional plans. Because the model contains all relevant details of the scheme it allows for more accurate costs, helps with ordering materials and results in less waste.

Contractors have been told they must be BIM compliant in order to bid for Government contracts and Niven Architects are among a handful of practices leading the way in the cutting edge technology and processes.

Jake said: “I was approached before I had finished my course and had two interviews. I was concerned about securing a job so this was a fantastic opportunity which I am really enjoying.

“I have been working on designs for handrails and backrests for a disabled toilet and an asymmetrical hand basin for a German manufacturer who provides sanitaryware for upmarket hotel chains.”

Head of BIM Strategy services John Adams said: “Jake has fitted in fantastically well and is really helping us expand this exciting part of our business. Darlington College has proved to be a fabulous resource for us right on our doorstep providing us with an invaluable employee with the perfect skill set for our needs.”

Darlington College work experience coordinator Ross Lowcock said: “There is a huge shortage of talent across many industries and Jake is a brilliant example of how we are developing students’ skills to meet the needs of an increasingly hi-tech world. We are so thrilled to help an employer whose offices we can actually see from our classroom windows.”
