LITTLE learners took a big first step in their education at the opening of a purpose-built nursery for two-year-olds.
A ribbon was cut at Mount Pleasant Primary School’s Little Learners in Darlington by the oldest pupil Lucas Wood, 11, and Tommy Watson, two, the youngest starter at the new Darlington facility.
Local authority funded and designed by Darlington Borough Council architect Michael Johnson, the building features indoor play areas, a reading corner and enclosed outdoor playground.
The nursery can accommodate 24 children in both its morning and afternoon sessions. It was officially opened with the help of the school council, who also ran a competition to come up with the name Little Learners.
Head teacher at Mount Pleasant Primary School Carol Coleman said: “Darlington Borough Council was very keen to increase the number of nursery places for two-year-olds in the town and we were more than happy to offer to host a new provision here at Mount Pleasant.
“Early entry to nursery not only helps the children themselves develop both educationally and socially, it also supports families with other small children at home, or those who may struggle with childcare arrangements.”
Nursery leader Marie Pratt, of Darlington, who came to Mount Pleasant Little Learners from the private nursery sector, said: “ This is an outstanding facility which I am really excited to be a part of.
“Not only does early education for two-year-olds have a big impact on their social development, it also helps to displace any anxiety about starting school in the future and gives parents and carers much-needed time for themselves.”
Parent Stephanie Watson, of Darlington, whose son Tommy helped to cut the opening ribbon, added: “I work on a morning so it’s really helpful for me and Tommy has settled in really well.
“He gets to play with other children and I don’t have to worry – it’s a really good nursery.”
