HUNDREDS of ladies burned the midnight oil in an annual mass gathering to raise much-needed funds for a cause close to their hearts.
More than 200 descended on South Park, Darlington, for the Midnight Walk to raise funds for St Teresa’s Hospice.
Their efforts were needed more than ever this year as the hospice has just begun work on a new 10-bed inpatient unit to boost further the already exacting levels of care at the much-loved facility in Woodland Road.
Walkers, many in fancy dress, also sported fun flashing bracelets and headgear provided as part of a hospice goody bag.
After registering the ladies took part in a rigorous warm up led by fitness experts Military Boot Camp.
Addressing the crowd hospice chief executive Jane Bradshaw said: “I know this walk and the hospice means an awful lot and that many are walking in memory of loved ones or for family and friends who are poorly and receiving our care.
“St Teresa’s needs your help more than ever. We are a pioneering hospice and this is made possible by the fantastic support we receive from the community. It’s an amazing charity to work for and it’s an amazing charity to support.”
Walker Tracey High said: “My dad used to go to the hospice every Friday and he loved it. It is an amazing place and we are delighted to give something back by supporting the walk.”
Now in its eighth year, the walk has raised more than £100,000.
As the midnight hour approached walkers made their way to a balloon arch, provided free by 1st Stop Party Shop, for the start by the Deputy Mayor of Darlington Coun Brian Jones and his wife Doris.
They then completed a 1.5-mile route through South Park before enjoying a hot drink and bacon butty at the finish line donated by Asda Whinbush Way, Morrisons Morton Park and Morrisons North Road, prepared with assistance from cadets of the 405 Squadron Air Training Corps, with drinks provided by Northumbrian Water.
Security was provided free by Securitas and the event was also staged with support from Darlington Borough Council.
