SPORTY scientists and history girls have been appointed to lead students at a North Yorkshire school.
Ripon Grammar School has chosen its new head boy and head girl and their deputies, who will represent the student body for the coming year.
The students had to apply for the positions and be interviewed by headmaster Martin Pearman, head of sixth form Terry Fell and an outgoing school officer.
Farmer's son James Donaldson, 16, of North Stainley, and Donna Castle-Ward, 17, of Ripon, are the school's new head boy and head girl.
Donna, who is studying A levels in history, geography, English and maths, and enjoys sport and drama, said: "Our main roles include managing the prefects, organising Charity Week, speaking at school events and being on the School Council.
"In my application I said I felt I was someone that other students could talk to and I could be a role model. I'm really excited about being head girl and can't wait to get started."
Donna is supported by deputy head girls Julia Atherley, who wants to be a journalist, Annabelle Blyton, who sings, acts, plays the clarinet, piano and and saxophone, and Lucy Mumford, a sixth form boarder who will help to be a voice for her fellow students in the girls' boarding house.
James, who is studying maths, further maths, chemistry and biology, and plays cricket and the drums, added: "The school officers are chosen for their interpersonal skills and for being able to communicate with a wide range of people from first formers to sixth formers, and teachers."
His deputies are Jack Baker, who wants to read medicine after his A levels in biology, chemistry, maths and physics, and Newcastle United fan and swim team captain Matthew Griffiths, who, like head boy James, wants to go on to study biochemistry at university.
Mr Pearman said: "Applications for our school officer positions were of an extremely high standard. It's encouraging that so many students embody the qualities we are looking for.
"James, Donna and their deputies will do a fantastic job leading the student body, developing their leadership skills and taking on a range of responsibilities."
