ART students proved they were far from bored when they came up with some winning designs.

Their images will now feature on trendy t-shirts being offered by a North-East firm as an alternative to mainstream fashion.

Sixty Darlington College students were commissioned by Stockton-based Bored Sports to come up with graphics for a range of t-shirts.

The first year Level 2 and 3 diploma in art and design students spent weeks working on the project.

But instead of Bored Sports owner Alun Pearson judging the best designs he let the students vote for their favourites.

The clear winner was Katie Motson, 19, of Darlington, the success being a boost to her ambitions to become an interior designer one day.

“I was genuinely shocked to win because there were so many great designs which I thought were better than mine,” she said.

Mr Pearson said he launched the clothing range to fill a niche and had experienced great feedback with the Bored brand.

Ten of the best designs will be printed on t-shirts that will be sold around the country.

“The students have done a brilliant job and I think the t-shirts will really resonate with young people because they were designed by young people,” he said

Tutor Pippa Eeles added: “All the students really rose to the challenge of working on a genuine brief, which involved a client and deadlines.

“They have produced some quality work and we are all looking forward to seeing people wearing their designs around the region.”
