STATE of the art sports facilities have been opened at a Teesside school boosting the learning opportunities of students and the community. A cutting-edge pitch, designed to FIFA and FA standards, has been installed at St Michael's Catholic Academy, Billingham, allowing year-round access to football, rugby and other outdoor activities, regardless of weather conditions. The new facility is being hailed a game-changer for both the school and the wider Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust community and is the culmination of years of planning. Headteacher Clare Humble said the versatile facility will truly elevate the school’s physical education curriculum. It was also hoped that in the future, it would also provide a shared space for local clubs, parish groups and families to come together and further strengthen the bonds between Trust and community. She added: “This would not have happened if it hadn’t had been for my predecessor Helen Keough who shared our vision and we are absolutely delighted that the pitch is finally completed for everyone to use.” Mrs Humble also expressed her gratitude to chair of BHCET directors Yvonne Coates, Trust CEO Stuart McGhee and chief operating officer Trish Abbott for their ‘unwavering support throughout the entire process’. Access to sport is considered an invaluable tool in enhancing learning. Increased activity is proven to boost the physical welfare and mental wellbeing of all students and can form an elite pathway for talented young athletes into professional sport and coaching careers. At the opening, students, staff and members of BHCET came together for an official blessing, led by two students, to inaugurate the space as ‘a symbol of inclusion, camaraderie, and growth, ensuring its legacy as more than just a playing field’. Mr McGhee said: “This is a fantastic resource for the children of St Michael’s and the community that will be used and bring enjoyment for years to come. We are delighted to have been able to support the school to secure this facility. “The grand opening of this outstanding facility is a powerful reminder of the impact that vision, partnership and faith can achieve. St Michael’s has set a precedent for excellence that will echo across the Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust for generations to come.”
