AN education leader is sharing his success with family and colleagues after being recognised in the New Year Honours list for his contribution to education.
Nigel Ashley, the chief executive of Elevate Multi-Academy Trust, based in North Yorkshire, has been awarded an OBE for services to education.
He founded the Trust eight years ago and now oversees the work of 18 primary schools in North Yorkshire and Leeds.
Reflecting on the honour, Mr Ashley said: “This award is a recognition of the collective hard work and commitment of so many people. I’m privileged to work alongside dedicated teaching staff, inspiring headteachers and a support team who care deeply about making a difference for children.”
Throughout his career, he has been driven to improving opportunities for young people. At the age of 27 he took on his first headteacher role at Dishforth Church of England Primary School, helping the children achieve exceptionally high results over a five year period.
“From there he moved to Meadowside County Primary School in Knaresborough, and, with the support of his staff, transformed it to become one of the top-performing schools in the area.
Mr Ashley plays a significant role in championing small and rural schools as co-chair of the National Small Schools Group. He has also contributed to national education initiatives including setting up the North Star, and then later with a colleague, the Polaris Teaching School Alliances.
He said: “The more complex the world becomes, the clearer our role is to meet children’s individual needs, build strong relationships and inspire them to be the best they can be. We must help children develop resilience, character and ambition through both experiencing successes and challenges.”
Beyond education, Mr Ashley is an avid sports enthusiast. He has played football, cricket, and squash and now enjoys golf and padel.
He expressed gratitude to his family and colleagues for their support, adding: “I’m humbled by this recognition and hope it shines a light on the incredible work happening in schools every day. This is a celebration of everyone dedicated to helping children thrive.”
