A kind-hearted student took neighbourliness to a new height when she organised a night of glitz, glamour and giving for a charity on her doorstep.
Jemima Parkinson, a sixth form student at Carmel College, Darlington, organised a charity ball as part of her Extended Project Qualification.
The 17-year-old chose St Teresa’s Hospice as the beneficiary as she lives just around the corner from the Woodlands Road site.
Generous guests joined Jemima at Bannatynes Darlington, raising £1,500 during an evening of food, fundraising and fabulous live music.
“I’ve always known about the hospice because the founder, Yvonne Rowe, was one of my neighbours and we live around the corner,” said Jemima.
“During my project I learnt more about how many people the hospice helps. Its care impacts so many people and it is vital it can continue its good work. I’m delighted we managed to raise £1,500.”
St Teresa’s Hospice senior community and events fundraiser Emily Robson said: “As a charity, we can only survive with the support and generosity of people like Jemima, particularly during one of the most difficult times in our history. This allows us to continue providing high-quality palliative care to those who need it most.
“We were absolutely thrilled when Jemima got in touch and told us she was planning an event in aid of the hospice. We love to hear about people’s fundraising, especially when it is something as exciting as a ball.
“I attended the evening and it was fantastic for everyone involved. Well done and thank you so much Jemima.”
St Teresa’s needs to raise £3m a year to provide free inpatient and community care for people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families in Darlington, South Durham and North Yorkshire.
