SCHOOL staff are ensuring that pupils receive the best start to the day before knuckling down to their home studies by delivering them breakfast.
New York bagels, healthy cereals and porridge are on the menu to kickstart the day for pupils at Springfield Academy, part of the Education Village, Darlington.
Staff have teamed up with the National Schools Breakfast Programme which has been supporting free breakfast provision at the academy since last year.
The Principal and Deputy Head Teacher are packaging up two-weeks’ worth of supplies and are busy delivering the breakfasts to families, ensuring children are fuelled up and ready to engage in remote learning.
Principal Richard Gartland said: “The National Schools Breakfast Programme have been brilliant at delivering the food to the school; they have really come up with the goods. It takes us about four hours to deliver it all to about 100 families but it is worth every minute.
“We have to maintain social distancing but we can see the children who wave at us through the window. We have had a lovely reception from parents, guardians and children and it is great to be able to maintain contact through these very difficult times.”
Parent Georgina Gaddass said: “It amazes me every day everything the school does for our children at this time. I know I’ve said it before, but thank you so much.”
Pupils are making the most of the trust’s virtual learning platform with families receiving support with the technological aspects of the system. Work packs, textbooks and exercise books have also been delivered to homes where the internet coverage is patchy.
