MATHEMATICIANS have been rewarded for their efforts in a contest that adds them to the ranks of the best problem-solvers in the region.
Richmond School and Sixth Form College students collected six accolades, the highest of any school, in a competition run by Newcastle University.
The Newcastle University Maths Challenge set students ten mind-taxing problems, each one an individual assignment.
Every year the event attracts 700 entries from the North’s most gifted and talented students. Richmond School and Sixth Form College invited students from different years to enter the competition and submitted the best 20 for final assessment by Newcastle University.
Incredibly, six received certificates with one, Jack Galpin, 14, of Melsonby, being selected as one of just three students to receive a special commendation.
Also reaching the finals were Joshua Kind, Sophia O’Callaghan, James Lunn, Harvey Scott, Isobel Brooks and Lucy Chandler.
Head of maths Scott Lunn said: “I am incredibly pleased with our students. Last year was phenomenal but this year we have done even better.
“This shows how strong the school is at the very top end of maths. We received more awards than any other school on the night. This is massive, a really big deal for us and offered students the perfect opportunity to shine.
“The amount of work each student has put into this has been huge. Each question is virtually an assignment and they have to communicate the answers to a high degree. The success of the students has been a true inspiration.”
