MASKED villains and caped crusaders have swooped into a Teesside academy to help celebrate superhero day.

Avengers assembled as Spiderman, Ironman, Captain America, Wonder Woman, and Bat Girl all descended on Ash Trees Academy, Billingham, which supports pupils with severe learning difficulties and profound and complex medical needs, as pupils dressed as their favourite comic book character for the day.

Head of Academy Wendy Coates said: “All our pupils have been learning about superheroes and recognising that each one of them has something special about them that makes them a superhero too.

“We have been looking at the superheroes in our own lives such as parents and carers and also learning through fun and exploration with role play, and arts and crafts making a Gotham City light room and a jail for superhero villains.

“Using sensory and interactive comic based play each class has looked at different aspects of the curriculum and our dressing up day allows them to have fun and explore learning in lots of new ways.”

Pupils were given the opportunity to fly through the air with the help of state of the art green screen technology, take part in a superhero treasure hunt, enjoy a superhero experience in the academy’s new sensory immersion room and use problem solving skills to foil villains in a mock bomb disposal before enjoying a superhero themed picnic lunch.

Activities throughout the day were also updated onto the school’s internet blog to be shared by parents and superhero watchers across the entire galaxy and beyond.

“It’s wonderful for pupils to enjoy a range of different learning experiences and for them to be able to communicate and play with children in different classes across the whole school,” added Ms Coates.

“Our children may face issues with different levels of ability but they have the same aspirations and expectations that all children have and each one of them has shown today that they are all super heroes in their own individual ways.”
