PRIMARY pupils ran, skipped and jumped for joy as they took part in their first ever competitive sports day.
Children in Reception class at Bede Academy, in Blyth, joined in with egg and spoon races, bean bag balancing, speed walking and cone weaving, watched by dozens of parents, grandparents, siblings and carers.
The 91 pupils, aged four and five, competed in teams for house honours with all pupils taking part in each event.
Teaching assistant Emma Wilkinson said: “The children have been practising hard all week and have been really looking forward to taking part in all the different events – some of them said that they couldn’t even sleep last night as they were so excited.
“They love being part of a team and getting involved, especially with all their parents watching and they feel so proud regardless of whether they come first or last – for them it’s all about taking part.”
Refreshments were available for spectators, with proceeds going towards extra sporting equipment for pupils to use at break-times.
Parents also got in on the sporting action with a ladies’ race won by Lisa Keenlyside, mum to Jaden Keenlyside, and a dads’ race which saw James Musgrove, stepdad to Charlie Parker, first past the winning post.
Early years lead Maria Bulfin said: “All of the children have done so well, especially for their first sports day.
“They have been full of energy and enthusiasm and have really worked hard as part of a team to win points for their school houses.
“It’s fabulous to see everyone outside being active and enjoying themselves, including all the mums and dads.”
