SCHOOL children have been honing their skills with a week of activities designed to boost mind and body. Barnard Castle Preparatory School launched Wellbeing Week with a series of sporting events in an initiative aimed at bolstering mental and physical health. Move it Monday gave way to Thoughtful Tuesday whereby each class took part in some mindful colouring, yoga and breathing exercises while having the opportunity to make friendship bracelets during registration, lunch time and class time. We Like to be Kind Wednesday saw all pupils being kind and thoughtful to each other throughout the day. This included something as simple as asking classmates to join in with a game at break time or drawing someone a picture. Thankful Thursday resulted in a ‘wall of gratitude’ being created featuring notes of the things in life for which they feel most grateful. The week concluded with Feel Good Friday featuring singing and dancing, music over break time and a disco in the hall at lunch time. Organiser Jennifer Strachan, Year 3 teacher, said: “Wellbeing Week was designed to promote physical and mental health and launching with Move it Monday got everyone off to a flying start. “The benefits of physical activity are well-proven in boosting the cardiovascular system, enhancing concentration, mood and self-esteem, while also supporting academic performance and social interaction. All the children loved taking part in Wellbeing Week the effects of which I am sure will last for a long time.”
