HARD working school children were taught some big skills to top off a year of successful learning. Pupils from Barnard Castle Preparatory School took to the big top to learn a range of circus skills as part of a daylong summer fun day. Circus performers staged workshops instructing the children in how to spin plates on canes and tops on ropes, as well as hula hoops around their waists. Huge inflatable obstacle courses also became the centre of fun, as did traditional games including Twister and giant Jenga. Children enjoyed a Lego challenge and a variety of arts and crafts sessions, ranging from bracelet making to paper aeroplane designs. Children took it turns to play rounders and explore the forest school and chill zone, before enjoying a barbeque and an end of day whole school performance. Headmistress Laura Turner said: “All the children have worked incredibly hard this year and reaped the benefits both academically and in developing a host of soft skills that will set them up for life. “How better to end their formal learning than with a summer fun-day that I’m sure they will remember for years to come.”
