A TASTE of restaurant life has boosted a student’s aspirations after a securing work experience with a chef he watched on television.
Darlington College student Thomas Hoare was left ‘inspired’ after working front of house at Hansom Restaurant and Wine Bar, the newest eatery in Bedale.
Owned and run by Ruth Hansom-Rigby, the 28-year-old chef has appeared on Million Pound Menu, the Great British Menu and on cooking programmes hosted by Matt Tebbutt and James Martin.
Thomas, 24, of Bedale, who lives with autism and is studying a level 2 diploma in professional food and beverage, said: “I first watched Ruth on Million Pound Menu so to meet her in person was quite something.
“It is great to have a restaurant like this in Bedale, which is more fine dining, and it has really inspired me as it was brilliant. It was a great atmosphere and the staff were so friendly.”
Ruth said: “Thomas was so good, very enthusiastic and he picked everything up very quickly. I keep in touch with college tutor Dawn Cobb-Neate and like to offer any student the chance see what we are doing in the restaurant.”
Dawn added: “We are blessed at Darlington College with amazing facilities, including industry standard kitchens and a great training restaurant, but to have the opportunity to work in such a popular eatery is incredible for students and the beneficial impact on Thomas is clear to see.”
Thomas secured his level 1 and 2 in kitchen, larder and patisserie and is planning next to complete a level 3 qualification in professional food and beverage.
“I love meeting and greeting, that’s my favourite part of the course,” he said.
