PUPILS at West Park Academy swapped school uniform for pyjamas, onesies and dressing gowns for a day dedicated to reading and books and storytelling.
Year 1’s class 2 began the day with storytime as teacher Lindsey Tinkler read The Ugly Five by Julia Donaldson, their author of the month.
Later in the day the children headed off on a scavenger hunt to find fictional characters and made books for nursery children.
“It’s a celebration of books and reading, appreciating different authors and exposing the children to a range of books,” said Mrs Tinkler.
For Year 2 children the day started with reading together with the school’s oldest children.
Year 6 teacher Alison Boyd said: “The Year 6s have come down to read to the Year 2s and vice versa. We have some Reader Leaders who read to the younger ones at lunchtime and they really enjoy it. It gives the younger ones something to aspire to when they hear the older ones reading.
“The children have brought their favourite bedtime stories to school and we will be discussing why they like them and using their reading skills to come up with questions around why certain books are appealing.”
Jo Dixon’s Year 2 class focused on Roald Dahl and teacher Jo Dixon led potion making from George’s Marvellous Medicine and the children drew artwork of their dreams inspired by The BFG.
