STUDENTS have been rewarded for their efforts after drawing on their artistic talents.

The work of seven budding artists from South Shields School is part of an exhibition at the town’s museum and art gallery.

More than 30 students from Years 7 to 11 at South Shields School were invited to submit artwork to the annual Young Artist Award contest run by Rotary Club.

Twenty-four winning works were selected from across South Tyneside for the exhibition including seven from South Shields School. The pieces, comprising a variety of media, will now be on show until the spring.

Art teacher Keighley Wanless said: “Students could use any medium except photography and they produced some stunning work. I am really proud of them all. The uptake in school was immense and I was particularly excited to see work from our Year 8s being selected.”

For Abby Bailey the competition was the chance to express her passion for Gothic art. The 16-year-old produced an image of Addams Family character Morticia Addams. “I love the Gothic culture and was really pleased that my work was selected,” she said.

Fellow winner Harley Hamilton, 15, said: “I produced a tonal drawing of an old man and winning has certainly inspired me in my dream to study art, media and photography.”

Faith Dean, 12, was equally inspired by her success. “I also would love to study art and make it my career.”

The exhibition runs until April.
