A STUDENT is on the crest of a wave after being selected for a life-changing adventure at sea.
Risedale Sports and Community College student Cheyanne Gilpin will join a team of young adventurers aboard the James Cook, a voyage organised by the Ocean Youth Trust.
The Catterick Garrison 15-year-old secured the only place from secondary schools across the region and will set sail on the yacht from the Royal Quays, North Shields, from August 1-6.
“It’s an amazing opportunity, a once in a lifetime experience and I’m really excited to go on a new adventure,” said the Year 11 student, whose trip is being sponsored by Richmond Rotary Club.
“My mum was so proud when we found out I had been selected. When I get back I have to write a report about the voyage.”
Assistant principal Samantha Wood said: “She will have an amazing time and will make life-long friendships with people she has never met before.
“Cheyanne is passionate about sport, particularly football, which she plays and coaches and she fits it all around her studies. The voyage will really stand her in good stead for the future.”
After leaving Risedale she hopes to study animal management at York College and zoology at university.
“I love animals and have been to South Africa,” she said. “I enjoy visiting zoos and would love to be a zoologist or keeper one day.”
